Write mean ++ variance in terms of n,p,qn,p,q, use n=5n=5 and p+q=1p+q=1 to get a quadratic in qq, then solve.

For a binomial distribution with n=5n=5 trials: mean =np=np, variance =npq=npq.

Given: mean ++ variance =1.8= 1.8:

np+npq=1.8 ⇒ np(1+q)=1.8 ⇒ 5p(1+q)=1.8 ⇒ p(1+q)=0.36np + npq = 1.8 \ \Rightarrow\ np(1+q) = 1.8 \ \Rightarrow\ 5p(1+q)=1.8 \ \Rightarrow\ p(1+q) = 0.36

Since p=1−qp = 1-q:

(1−q)(1+q)=0.36 ⇒ 1−q2=0.36 ⇒ q2=0.64 ⇒ q=0.8(1-q)(1+q) = 0.36 \ \Rightarrow\ 1-q^2 = 0.36 \ \Rightarrow\ q^2 = 0.64 \ \Rightarrow\ q = 0.8

(taking the positive root, since 0<q<10<q<1).

So p=1−q=0.2p = 1-q = 0.2.
