Q.What is Udyam Registration? State its significance.
Udyam Registration is the current (post-2020) online registration mechanism through which an enterprise satisfying the MSMED Act's investment-and-turnover criteria formally records itself as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise with the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum system, is entirely free of cost, requires no supporting documents at the time of filing (a self-declaration based on PAN and GST data), and generates a permanent registration number and an e-certificate.
Registration is not legally compulsory for running a business, but its significance is considerable because most MSME-specific benefits are conditional on it:
- Access to collateral-free loans under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE).
- Priority-sector lending status with banks, which improves the ease and cost of institutional credit.
- Price and purchase preference in government tenders, including reservation of certain items for exclusive MSME procurement.
- Statutory protection against delayed payments, since only a registered enterprise can approach the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council under the Act.
- Subsidies on patent/trademark registration fees, industrial promotion subsidies, and, in states such as Andhra Pradesh, state-level power-tariff and land-allotment concessions.
Udyam Registration is the Government of India's free, self-declaration-based online registration for enterprises meeting the MSME investment-and-turnover criteria. Although voluntary, it is significant because it is the precondition for almost every real MSME benefit — collateral-free credit-guarantee cover, tender preference, fee subsidies, and protection against delayed payments.
