Utility is the want-satisfying power of a good or service — a subjective, relative, and ethically neutral quality. It is sometimes called "value in use." A good must possess some utility before anyone will want to acquire it at all.

Value, in the specific sense of value in exchange, is the rate at which one good can be exchanged for another good or for money in the market — it measures a good's power to command other goods, not simply how satisfying it is to consume. Value in use (utility) and value in exchange do not always move together: the classical paradox of value shows that water has enormous value in use but very little value in exchange (being abundant and cheap), while diamonds have limited value in use but very high value in exchange (being extremely scarce). The resolution lies in marginal utility and scarcity together, not total usefulness alone — because water is abundant, the marginal (additional) unit of water yields very little extra satisfaction, keeping its exchange value low, whereas the extreme scarcity of diamonds keeps their marginal utility, and hence their exchange value, high.

Price is simply value in exchange expressed specifically in terms of money, once a monetary economy replaces pure barter. In a market economy, price is determined by the joint working of demand (which depends heavily on consumers' utility from the good) and supply (which depends on the cost and scarcity of producing it) — a mechanism studied fully in the Theory of Demand and Theory of Value chapters that follow. …
