Ethylene both promotes useful processes like ripening and root growth and drives inhibitory ones like senescence and abscission; ABA both inhibits growth/germination and protects the plant through dormancy and stress tolerance — so each hormone genuinely has both faces.

Ethylene's positive roles. Ethylene is highly effective in fruit ripening, raising the fruit's respiration rate as it ripens; it promotes root growth and root hair formation, increasing the plant's absorption surface; and it breaks seed and bud dormancy, initiating germination in peanut seeds and sprouting in potato tubers — all useful, growth-enabling effects.

Ethylene's negative roles. At the same time, ethylene promotes senescence and abscission of plant organs, especially leaves and flowers, and it can inhibit or reshape normal growth, as seen in its promotion of horizontal growth and apical-hook formation rather than normal upright elongation in dicot seedlings.

ABA's negative roles. Abscisic acid acts overall as a general plant growth inhibitor and an inhibitor of plant metabolism, and it specifically inhibits seed germination. …
