The fungus infecting the rice released a substance, later identified as gibberellic acid, that caused excessive elongation of the seedlings' stems — giving them their abnormally tall, weak, "foolish" appearance.

The bakanae, or foolish seedling, disease of rice seedlings was caused by the fungal pathogen Gibberella fujikuroi. When researchers treated healthy rice seedlings with sterile filtrates of the fungus — that is, with the fungal culture liquid but without any living fungal cells — the seedlings still developed the same symptoms of the disease. This showed that a chemical substance secreted by the fungus, not the fungus itself, was responsible, and this active substance was later identified as gibberellic acid. …
