Meaning
Electronic banking (e-banking) is the delivery of banking services through electronic channels such as the internet, mobile phones, ATMs and payment cards, so that a customer can transact at any time without going to the branch. It is studied in the AP Intermediate 2nd-year Commerce Banking Services chapter.
Advantages of E-Banking
1. Round-the-clock service — Banking facilities are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, including holidays, unlike branch banking which has fixed hours.
2. Convenience — Customers can operate their accounts from home, office or anywhere, saving the time and effort of visiting a branch and standing in queues.
3. Speed — Transactions such as fund transfers, bill payments and balance enquiries are completed instantly through NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and UPI.
4. Lower cost — Electronic transactions cost both the bank and the customer far less than manual, paper-based branch transactions.
5. Anywhere, anytime access — A customer can access the account from any place with internet or a mobile signal, even from another city or country.
6. Accurate and up-to-date records — Account statements, transaction history and balances are available online at once, reducing errors and making monitoring easy.
