Meaning and Concept of Entrepreneurship

The earlier chapter on the Entrepreneur looked at the person who starts and runs a new venture. This chapter looks at entrepreneurship itself -- the process that a person goes through, not the person doing it. For a student of AP Inter II year Commerce, keeping this distinction sharp matters, because the BIEAP commerce syllabus tests both terms separately and examiners routinely penalise an answer that treats them as interchangeable.

Entrepreneurship may be defined as the dynamic process of identifying a business opportunity, mobilising resources, and organising a new venture to convert that opportunity into a going concern, while bearing the risks and uncertainties involved. It is a process because it unfolds over time, in a sequence of steps -- it is not a single act, and it does not end once the venture is launched; a genuine entrepreneurial process continues as long as the venture keeps innovating and growing.

Three closely related terms are often confused, and it helps to keep each one distinct:

  • Entrepreneur -- the individual who conceives the idea, takes the risk, and drives the venture.
  • Entrepreneurship -- the process that individual follows: opportunity-seeking, innovating, resource-mobilising, and venture-building.
  • Enterprise -- the actual business unit or organisation that results from that process -- the firm, company, or undertaking itself.

Entrepreneurship carries a few defining characteristics that recur across every level of the AP board commerce syllabus: it is innovative -- it introduces something new (a product, a process, a market, or a way of organising); it is risk-bearing -- it commits resources today against an uncertain future return; it is purposeful and organised -- resources (capital, labour, material, technology) are consciously assembled and coordinated toward a goal; and it is dynamic and continuous -- a true entrepreneurial venture keeps adapting and growing rather than settling into a fixed routine.

Definition 1Entrepreneurship

The dynamic process of identifying a business opportunity, mobilising resources, and organising a new venture to exploit that opportunity, while bearing the associated risks and uncertainties.

Definition 2Enterprise

The actual business unit, firm, or organisation that results from the entrepreneurial process -- the concrete undertaking, as distinct from the person (entrepreneur) or the process (entrepreneurship) behind it.
