Agriculture is vital to India because it provides income, employment, food, industrial raw materials, export earnings and a market for industry, besides supporting transport, government revenue, capital formation and planning. Though its share in GDP has fallen, it still sustains the majority of the people.

Agriculture has always been central to the Indian economy. Even today, when the services sector dominates output, farming remains the main source of livelihood for the majority. The AP Intermediate 2nd-year Economics syllabus (which aligns with the NCERT/CBSE commerce curriculum) highlights the following roles.

Importance of agriculture in the Indian economy:

  1. Share in national income. Agriculture still contributes a notable share of national income, and for long periods it was the single largest contributor.

  2. Source of employment. Close to half of India's working population depends on agriculture and allied activities for its livelihood.

  3. Supply of food. Farming feeds the country's large and growing population and is essential for food security and price stability.

  4. Supply of raw materials to industry. Agro-based industries such as textiles, sugar, jute, edible oils and food processing depend on farm output for their raw materials.

  5. Market for industrial goods. The large rural population creates demand for fertilisers, pesticides, machinery and consumer goods produced by industry.

  6. Contribution to foreign trade. Exports of tea, coffee, spices, rice, cotton and other farm products earn valuable foreign exchange.

  7. Source of government revenue. Land revenue, taxes on agricultural trade and related activities add to public finances.

  8. Support to transport. A large part of railway and road freight consists of farm produce and farm inputs.
