Characteristic Features of the Andhra Pradesh Economy

The economy of Andhra Pradesh has a distinctive character that sets it apart from many other Indian states. The following features are the ones the AP Board Economics syllabus expects a student to describe and explain.

1. A predominantly agrarian and rural base. Agriculture and allied activities (crop cultivation, animal husbandry, fisheries) contribute a much larger share of the state's income than they do to the national economy, and a large part of the population still depends on farming for a livelihood. Andhra Pradesh is famously called the "Rice Bowl of India", and the Krishna–Godavari delta is among the most fertile and productive rice-growing regions in the country.

2. A long, productive coastline. Andhra Pradesh has one of the longest coastlines of any Indian state — of the order of 970 kilometres along the Bay of Bengal (the second longest in India, after Gujarat). This coastline supports major ports (notably Visakhapatnam), a large marine- and inland-fisheries/aquaculture sector, and coastal industry.

3. River-fed, irrigation-intensive agriculture. The state is watered by major rivers — the Godavari, Krishna, Penna (Pennar) and Tungabhadra — whose deltas and canal networks support intensive, largely irrigated cultivation. Water availability, and therefore irrigation, is the single biggest determinant of the state's agricultural fortunes.

4. Marked regional disparities. The state combines a prosperous, well-irrigated coastal Andhra delta belt with the comparatively dry, drought-prone Rayalaseema interior (the Kadapa–Kurnool–Anantapur–Chittoor region). Reducing this regional imbalance in incomes, irrigation and industry is a standing policy challenge. …
