Demographic Features

A state's economy cannot be understood without its people — their number, distribution, literacy and sex composition all shape the labour supply, the consumption market and the pressure on land and public services.

Population and density (2011 Census, successor-state territory). As per the 2011 Census, the territory now forming the successor state of Andhra Pradesh had a population of about 4.95 crore (approximately 49.5 million), spread over roughly 1.6 lakh square kilometres. Its population density was about 308 persons per square kilometre, which is below the all-India average — the state is comparatively less crowded than India as a whole.

Sex ratio. Andhra Pradesh has a favourable sex ratio of about 992 females per 1,000 males (2011 Census), which is higher than the national average — one of the more positive features of the state's demography.

Literacy. The literacy rate recorded in the 2011 Census was about 67–68 per cent, somewhat below the all-India literacy rate — indicating that improving education remains an important development priority for the state.
