A gateway is a network device that joins two different networks (often using different protocols) and works as a protocol converter and entry-exit point between them; plug-ins are small helper programs added to a browser, such as Adobe Flash Player or the Adobe PDF Reader plug-in.

In the networking unit of CBSE Class 12 Informatics Practices, we study several devices that build and connect networks — hubs, switches, routers, repeaters and gateways. Each has a distinct job. This question asks about the gateway and about browser plug-ins.

(i) Function of a Gateway

A gateway is a device (it can be hardware, software, or a combination) that connects two networks built differently — that is, networks that may use different protocols, data formats or architectures. Because the two sides effectively speak different languages, a gateway acts as a translator or protocol converter: it receives data from one network, converts it into a form the other network can understand, and forwards it.

A gateway is best thought of as the entry and exit point of a network. When the computers of a school LAN want to reach the Internet, their traffic passes out through a gateway, and replies from the Internet come back in through the same gateway. Any network that connects to a different network does so through a gateway.

Note

A router forwards data between networks that use the same protocol, whereas a gateway can connect networks that use different protocols — that protocol-translation ability is what makes a gateway special.
