The Harvard Step Test PFI formula is PFI = (Duration (seconds) × 100)/(5.5 × Pulse count (1–1.5 min)), with three bands: up to 49 = Poor, 50–80 = Average, 81 and above = Good.

The Harvard Step Test Formula

The Harvard Step Test measures cardiovascular fitness by observing how quickly the heart recovers after a standardized stepping exercise. A fitter heart returns to its resting rate more rapidly, yielding a higher Physical Fitness Index.

PFI = (Duration of the exercise in seconds × 100)/(5.5 × Pulse count of 1 to 1.5 min after exercise)

Understanding each term:

  • Duration of the exercise in seconds: If the subject completes the full protocol, this is 300 seconds (5 minutes). If the subject stops early due to exhaustion, record the actual number of seconds stepped. Never substitute 300 when the subject has stopped short.

  • Pulse count of 1 to 1.5 min after exercise: Immediately after stepping stops, the subject sits down. Starting at the 1-minute mark, count the pulse for exactly 30 seconds (from 1:00 to 1:30 after exercise). This is the raw 30-second count—do not double it to a per-minute rate. Only this single pulse measurement is used in the formula.

  • The constant 5.5: This scaling factor converts the raw data into the PFI score and is fixed in the prescribed formula.

Watch out

Two common mistakes destroy the calculation:

  1. Doubling the pulse count to a per-minute rate. The formula expects the raw 30-second count.
  2. Using 300 seconds when the subject stopped early. Always use the actual duration stepped.

The Three Interpretation Bands

Once you have computed the PFI, classify the result into one of three fitness categories:

PFI ScoreFitness Category
Up to 49Poor
50 to 80Average
81 and aboveGood
