Enzyme classification usually treats an enzyme as a single defined catalyst for a given reaction, but for some reactions the body actually produces several distinct molecular forms that all catalyse the very same overall reaction. These related but non-identical forms are called isoenzymes, or isozymes. Although each isoenzyme carries out the same chemical conversion, the different forms can vary in details such as their exact amino-acid composition, their optimum conditions, or the particular tissue of the body in which they are most abundantly produced, since different tissues may preferentially express different isoenzyme forms of what is, functionally, one enzyme.
