Sewage is the used water that flows out of our homes, schools, offices, and factories. Think of everything that goes down your kitchen sink, bathroom drain, or toilet — that mixture of water, soap, food scraps, human waste, and chemicals is sewage. In cities, this wastewater is carried through a network of underground pipes called sewers to a treatment plant. But in many places, especially where proper sanitation is lacking, sewage is simply dumped into rivers, lakes, or open ground.
The real danger of sewage lies in what it contains. It is not just dirty water — it is a complex cocktail of harmful substances. Human faeces and urine carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and hepatitis. Beyond germs, sewage also contains chemicals that are directly poisonous. Detergents, cleaning products, pesticides, and industrial waste often end up in sewage. These chemicals can irritate our skin and eyes, and if swallowed, they can damage internal organs. Some of these substances do not break down easily and can accumulate in the environment for years. …
