Q.Explain in brief the role of animal husbandry in human welfare.
Animal husbandry is the agricultural practice of breeding, raising, feeding and caring for farm animals such as cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, pigs, camels, horses and poultry. It plays a central role in human welfare in several ways:
- Food supply: Dairy animals (cows, buffaloes) provide milk and milk products, which are a major source of protein, calcium and fat in the Indian diet. Poultry supplies eggs and meat, while goats, sheep, pigs and cattle supply meat.
- Economic support and livelihood: Animal husbandry is a major source of income for millions of rural households, especially small and marginal farmers and landless labourers, who often depend on livestock as much as, or more than, crop farming.
- Draught power and farm inputs: Bullocks and other animals are still used for ploughing, transport and other agricultural operations in many parts of India, and animal dung is an important organic manure and biogas source.
- Fibre and other products: Sheep and goats provide wool and hair; hides and skins from livestock support the leather industry.
- Employment generation: Animal husbandry, along with allied activities like dairying, poultry, apiculture and fisheries, provides direct and indirect employment to a very large section of the population, particularly in rural India.
- National nutrition and economy: Because of its scale, scientific animal husbandry (improved breeds, better feeding, disease control, artificial insemination, MOET, etc.) directly improves the quantity and quality of food available to a growing population and strengthens the rural economy.
Because of all these roles, the scientific management of livestock resources (their feeding, breeding and disease control) is treated as one of the key strategies, along with plant breeding and tissue culture, for enhancing food production and improving human welfare.
Animal husbandry improves human welfare by supplying milk, meat, eggs, wool and hides, by providing draught power and manure for agriculture, and by generating income and employment for a large section of the rural population — making scientific management of livestock (feeding, breeding, disease control) essential for food and livelihood security.
