Both antiseptics and disinfectants kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, but they differ in where they can safely be used:

  • Antiseptics are applied directly to living tissues — skin, wounds, ulcers, and mucous membranes — to prevent infection. They are formulated to be safe (non-irritating/non-toxic) at the concentration used on the body. Example: furacin, soframycine (also, dilute — 0.2% — phenol solution).
  • Disinfectants are applied only to non-living objects/surfaces, such as floors, drainage systems, instruments and toilets. They are too harsh/toxic to be applied to living tissue. Example: 1% phenol solution used to disinfect floors and drains. …
