A honeybee colony is organised into three castes: the queen, drones (males) and workers (sterile females). Drones and workers differ in the following ways:
| Feature | Drone | Worker |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Develops from an unfertilised (haploid) egg by parthenogenesis | Develops from a fertilised (diploid) egg |
| Chromosome number | Haploid (n) | Diploid (2n) |
| Sex/fertility | Male, fertile (only role is to mate with the queen) | Female, sterile (reproductive organs underdeveloped) |
| Sting | Absent | Present, used for defence |
| Eyes | Large, well-developed compound eyes (helps locate the queen during the nuptial flight) | Comparatively smaller eyes |
| Body/mouthparts | Stouter body; no special pollen-collecting structures | Possess pollen baskets on hind legs and wax glands; mouthparts adapted for foraging |
