Skeletal muscle contraction depends on two major contractile proteins - actin and myosin - arranged as myofilaments in the myofibrils. Their differences are:
Actin (thin filament):
- Forms the thin filaments of the myofibril.
- It is a smaller and lighter protein; globular G-actin units polymerise to form filamentous F-actin, two of which twist to form the thin filament, associated with tropomyosin and troponin.
- Located in the I-band (and extends into the A-band).
- Acts as the 'track' along which myosin moves.
Myosin (thick filament):
