An account is a summarised, classified record of transactions relating to one head (a person, asset, expense or income). Its specimen is the two-sided "T" form: name at the top, Debit (Dr.) side on the left and Credit (Cr.) side on the right, each side carrying Date, Particulars, Journal Folio (J.F.) and Amount (₹) columns.

Meaning

An account is a record in the ledger that collects together, in a summarised form, all the transactions relating to a particular person, thing, expense or income. Each account is divided into two sides — the left-hand debit side and the right-hand credit side — which is why it is drawn in the shape of the letter T.

Specimen (format) of an account

The name of the account is written at the top and centre. "Dr." is written on the extreme left and "Cr." on the extreme right.
