Express both groups' sizes in terms of a common variable using the given 22:1 ratio, form the combined (weighted) total, and divide by the total number of officers.

Combined average =n1xˉ1+n2xˉ2n1+n2= \dfrac{n_1\bar{x}_1 + n_2\bar{x}_2}{n_1+n_2}, where n1,n2n_1,n_2 are group sizes and xˉ1,xˉ2\bar{x}_1,\bar{x}_2 their average contributions.

  1. Let the number of "other officers" =x= x. Then the number of defence officers =22x= 22x (given).
  2. Total PF contribution of defence officers =22x×28560=628320x= 22x \times 28560 = 628320x.
  3. Total PF contribution of other officers =x×22500=22500x= x \times 22500 = 22500x.
  4. Total contribution of all officers =628320x+22500x=650820x= 628320x + 22500x = 650820x.
  5. Total number of officers =22x+x=23x= 22x + x = 23x. …
