Misuse means using the environment in a harmful, wasteful way (e.g. dumping effluents into rivers, over-using agro-chemicals).
(a) Overuse of environmental resources
Overuse occurs when resources are extracted faster than they can regenerate, exceeding the carrying capacity of the environment:
- (i) Excessive extraction of ground water — pumping ground water in excess of the recharge capacity in cities and for irrigation, which lowers the water table.
- (ii) Over-extraction of forest resources — cutting trees for fuel-wood and timber faster than forests can regenerate, causing deforestation and loss of vegetation.
(b) Misuse of environmental resources
Misuse occurs when the environment is used in a harmful or improper way that damages its quality:
- (i) Discharge of untreated waste into rivers — releasing industrial effluents and untreated sewage into rivers and water bodies, contaminating water and making it unfit for use. …
