The system bus is the shared electrical highway linking CPU, memory and I/O; data travels both to and from the CPU (bidirectional data bus), but addresses are generated only by the CPU (unidirectional address bus).

Primary role of the system bus. The CPU, primary memory and input/output devices are physically separate units that must constantly exchange information. The system bus — a bundle of parallel wires — is the single shared pathway over which all of this communication happens. Every instruction fetch, every memory read/write and every device transfer rides on it. It is organised as three functional groups of lines:

  • Data bus — carries the actual data and instructions;
  • Address bus — carries the address of the memory location or device being accessed;
  • Control bus — carries the command and timing signals (memory read, memory write, I/O read/write, acknowledge).

Why the data bus is bidirectional. Consider the two basic operations:

OperationDirection of data on the data bus
CPU reads (fetches an instruction, loads a value)memory/device → CPU
CPU writes (stores a result, sends output)CPU → memory/device

Both directions are essential and use the same data lines, so the data bus must carry traffic both ways — bidirectional. …
