Newspaper = unstructured, cricket match score = structured, HTML page = semi-structured, hospital patient records = structured — decided by how rigidly each follows a pre-defined format.

The classifying idea. Data is categorised by how much pre-defined organisation it carries:

  • Structured — follows a rigid, pre-defined format: rows and columns / records with fixed fields, directly searchable (databases, spreadsheets).
  • Semi-structured — not a rigid table, but carries tags or markers that give it partial organisation (HTML, XML, JSON).
  • Unstructured — no pre-defined model at all: free text, images, audio, video mixed together.

Categorising each item

ItemCategoryWhy
NewspaperUnstructuredA mix of free-flowing articles, headlines of varying size, photographs and advertisements — there is no fixed record format you could query like a table.
Cricket match scoreStructuredA scorecard is inherently tabular: each batsman's runs, balls faced, fours, sixes; overs, wickets, run rate — fixed fields in fixed columns.
HTML pageSemi-structuredHTML tags (headings, paragraphs, tables) impose some organisation, but the content within the tags is free-form — the textbook's own example of semi-structured data.
