Ethylene hastens fruit ripening; it does not retard or slow it.

Ethylene is a simple gaseous plant growth regulator that is synthesised in large amounts by ripening fruits themselves. One of its most important physiological effects is that it is highly effective in fruit ripening: it enhances the respiration rate of the fruit during ripening, a rise called the respiratory climacteric.

Because of this effect, ethylene (applied commercially as ethephon, which releases ethylene slowly once absorbed) is deliberately used to hasten fruit ripening in tomatoes and apples, and to accelerate related processes such as abscission of flowers and fruits.

Note

This is the opposite of what a grower would want if trying to keep fruit fresh in transit — which is exactly why ripe fruit is often kept away from unripe fruit, since the ethylene released by the ripe fruit would hasten ripening of the rest.

Options (A) and (C), which describe ethylene retarding or slowing ripening, describe an effect ethylene does not have; only option (B) matches its true, hastening role.

✓Final answer

Ethylene is used for hastening the ripening of fruits — option (B).
