All four parts follow directly from this rule.
Concept — The Profit Constraint
Interest on capital is an appropriation, never a guaranteed payment: (1) it needs the deed's express permission, and (2) it can only be paid out of an actual profit. If the profit available is less than the total interest due, the interest itself is scaled down to fit — paid in the ratio of interest due, not the partners' profit-sharing ratio, and nothing is left over for a separate distribution.
Solution
- Deed silent, profit ₹50,000: No provision, no interest — the entire ₹50,000 is shared in the profit-sharing ratio 3:2 (Anupam ₹30,000, Abhishek ₹20,000).
- Deed provides 8%, loss of ₹10,000: A firm making a loss has no profit to appropriate interest from, so none is paid regardless of the deed. The ₹10,000 loss is shared 3:2 (Anupam ₹6,000, Abhishek ₹4,000).
- Deed provides 8%, profit ₹50,000:
- Interest due: Anupam 8% of ₹1,50,000 = ₹12,000; Abhishek 8% of ₹2,00,000 = ₹16,000. Total = ₹28,000.
- Profit (₹50,000) exceeds the interest due, so it is paid in full. Remaining profit = ₹50,000 − ₹28,000 = ₹22,000, shared 3:2 (Anupam ₹13,200, Abhishek ₹8,800).
(d) Deed provides 8%, profit ₹14,000:
- Interest due is still ₹28,000 (₹12,000 + ₹16,000), but profit is only ₹14,000 — less than the interest due. …
