(a) Distinguish between ‘Value Addition’ and ‘Final Value of Output’.
OR (b) Find the Value Added by Firm A, from the following information :
(Amount in ₹ crore)
| S.No. | Particulars | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| (i) | Purchase of factor inputs by Firm A | 5 |
| (ii) | Purchase of non-factor inputs by Firm A | 2 |
| (iii) | Sales by Firm A to other firms in the domestic economy | 10 |
| (iv) | Import of raw materials by firm A from rest of the world | 50 |

- Part (b): GVA = (Sales + ΔStock) − (non-factor inputs + imported raw materials) = (10 − 3) − (2 + 50) = −₹45 crore.
Part (a)
Along a production chain, each firm buys inputs from the previous stage, transforms them, and sells at a higher price. The extra value a single firm creates — its sales minus the value of goods bought from other firms — is its Value Added. Adding up firms' total sales would count the same intermediate goods repeatedly (double counting); value added avoids this.
The Final Value of Output is the price paid by the final user; by construction it equals the sum of all the value additions along the chain.
| Basis | Value Addition | Final Value of Output |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | A firm's/industry's net contribution to national income | Market value of goods/services for final use |
| Avoids double counting by | Deducting intermediate consumption | Counting only the final sale |
| Relation to GDP | Sum of value added of all firms = GDP | Sum of final expenditures = GDP |
