Diagnostics identify the cause or presence of a disease, while therapeutics treat or manage the disease itself — one tells you what is wrong, the other fixes it.

The distinction between diagnostics and therapeutics is fundamental to modern medicine, and it becomes especially clear when you look at how biotechnology has revolutionised both fields. Think of it this way: a diagnostic test is like a detective — it gathers evidence to identify the culprit behind an illness. A therapeutic, on the other hand, is like a repair crew — it steps in to fix the damage or neutralise the threat once the culprit is known.

Diagnostics are tools or procedures used to detect the presence of a disease, a pathogen, or a genetic predisposition. They answer the question, "What is happening inside the body?" For example, when you have a fever, a diagnostic test can tell you whether it is caused by a bacterial infection, a viral infection, or something else entirely. These tests often rely on detecting specific molecules — antigens, antibodies, or genetic material — that are unique to the disease.

Therapeutics, by contrast, are treatments designed to cure, manage, or prevent a disease. They answer the question, "How do we fix it?" Once a diagnosis is made, a therapeutic — such as a drug, a vaccine, or a protein-based therapy — is administered to target the underlying cause or alleviate symptoms. The goal is to restore health or improve quality of life.

Note

Some products blur the line — for instance, a vaccine is a therapeutic that prevents disease, but it is often administered before any diagnosis is made. However, in the strict sense of treatment versus detection, the distinction holds.

Now, let us ground this in the NCERT textbook's examples from the chapter on Biotechnology and its Applications.
