Menstrual cycles stop during pregnancy because the hormonal signals that trigger ovulation and uterine lining shedding are actively suppressed to maintain the pregnancy.

The menstrual cycle is a finely tuned hormonal dance designed to prepare the uterus for a potential pregnancy each month. When pregnancy actually occurs, the body must immediately switch from a cycle of preparation and shedding to a state of sustained maintenance. The key reason cycles vanish is that the developing embryo itself sends out a hormonal signal that overrides the normal cycle controls.

Once an egg is fertilised and implants into the uterine wall, the outer layer of the embryo (the trophoblast) begins secreting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) . This is the hormone detected by pregnancy tests. hCG acts very much like the pituitary hormone LH (luteinising hormone) — its main job is to rescue and maintain the corpus luteum, the temporary endocrine gland that forms in the ovary after ovulation.

In a normal, non-pregnant cycle, the corpus luteum degenerates after about 10–12 days. As it degenerates, levels of progesterone and oestrogen fall sharply. This drop in progesterone is what triggers the shedding of the uterine lining — that is, menstruation. But when hCG from the embryo keeps the corpus luteum alive and active, progesterone and oestrogen levels remain high and steady instead of falling.

Important

The sustained high level of progesterone is the single most important factor that prevents menstruation. Progesterone keeps the uterine lining (endometrium) thick, vascular, and secretory — perfect for nurturing the embryo. It also suppresses the pituitary gland's release of FSH and LH, which means no new ovarian follicles mature and no ovulation occurs. …
