Seminal plasma is the fluid part of semen, composed of secretions from the seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and bulbourethral glands, which together provide nourishment, protection, and motility to sperm.

Seminal plasma is not a single substance but a complex mixture of fluids contributed by three key accessory glands of the male reproductive system. These secretions combine with sperm from the testes to form semen. The major components come from the seminal vesicles, the prostate gland, and the bulbourethral glands, each adding specific substances that support sperm function.

The seminal vesicles contribute the largest volume — about 60–70% of the seminal plasma. Their secretion is rich in fructose, which serves as the primary energy source for sperm motility. It also contains prostaglandins, which are thought to aid in sperm transport by causing mild contractions in the female reproductive tract, and clotting proteins that help semen coagulate after ejaculation.

The prostate gland adds a thin, milky fluid that makes up roughly 20–30% of the seminal plasma. This prostatic secretion is alkaline, which is crucial because it neutralises the acidity of the vaginal environment, protecting sperm and enhancing their survival. It also contains enzymes like acid phosphatase and citric acid, though the key functional component is the alkaline buffer.

The bulbourethral glands (also called Cowper’s glands) contribute a small amount of clear, mucus-like fluid before the main ejaculate. This fluid acts as a lubricant and also helps neutralise any residual acidity in the urethra from urine. …
