Spermatogenesis is regulated by a precise interplay of hormones from the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and testes, primarily GnRH, FSH, LH, and testosterone.

The process of sperm formation, or spermatogenesis, does not happen in isolation. It is a carefully orchestrated event, controlled by a hormonal cascade that links the brain to the testes. This system is often called the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The hypothalamus, a region at the base of the brain, releases a hormone called Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) . This is the starting signal.

GnRH travels through a special network of blood vessels directly to the anterior pituitary gland. Once there, it stimulates the pituitary to secrete two crucial hormones: Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) . These are the direct messengers that act on the testes.

Note

Despite their names referring to female reproductive functions, LH and FSH are equally vital in males. The names are historical, based on their first-discovered roles in females.

Now, let us see what LH and FSH do inside the testes. LH acts on the Leydig cells, which are located in the connective tissue between the seminiferous tubules. Its primary job is to stimulate these cells to produce and secrete testosterone, the principal male sex hormone. Testosterone is essential for the initiation and maintenance of spermatogenesis. It also promotes the development of male secondary sexual characteristics.

FSH, on the other hand, acts directly on the Sertoli cells, which are the "nurse cells" lining the seminiferous tubules. FSH stimulates these Sertoli cells to release factors that are critical for the nourishment and maturation of the developing sperm cells. The Sertoli cells also produce a hormone called inhibin. …
