Industry is that branch of economic activity concerned with the raising, producing, processing or fabricating of products, or with the extraction of natural resources, and it forms the production base on which the whole structure of commerce and trade rests. The Andhra Pradesh Intermediate commerce syllabus classifies industry into three broad categories.

Primary industry is engaged in extracting or producing natural resources and is of two kinds: extractive industries, which draw resources directly from nature — mining (coal, iron ore, limestone), fishing, forestry and agriculture — and genetic industries, which breed and multiply plants or animals for commercial profit, such as poultry farms, cattle-breeding farms, plant nurseries, seed farms and fish hatcheries.

Secondary industry uses the raw material supplied by primary industry as its input and converts it into a finished or semi-finished form. It has two branches: manufacturing industries, which change the form or composition of raw material into a usable product — this can happen through an analytical process (separating crude oil into petrol, diesel and kerosene), a synthetic process (combining limestone, clay and gypsum into cement), a processing method (successively treating the same material, as in rice milling) or an assembling method (joining together several parts, as in manufacturing a bicycle or an electric fan); and construction industries, which are engaged in constructing buildings, dams, bridges, roads and canals — these are treated separately from manufacturing because the finished product is fixed at a particular site rather than being transportable to a market.

Tertiary industry consists of service industries that do not themselves produce a physical good but instead render services that support primary and secondary industry as well as commerce — examples include banking, insurance, transport, warehousing, communication and advertising.

The three types of industry are interdependent: primary industry supplies the raw material without which secondary industry could not function, secondary industry converts that material into goods that people actually want to buy, and tertiary industry provides the essential services — finance, risk cover, movement, storage and information — that keep both primary and secondary industry running and eventually connect their output to commerce and the final consumer. Understanding this classification is the foundation for the AP Board Intermediate commerce topics on commerce and trade that follow.

✓Final answer

Industry is classified into primary (extractive — mining, agriculture; genetic — poultry, nurseries), secondary (manufacturing — analytical/synthetic/processing/assembling; construction — buildings, roads) and tertiary (service — banking, insurance, transport, warehousing, advertising), each supplying the next stage of the production-to-consumption chain.
