Statistics is important because it expresses facts in numbers, simplifies and condenses large data, enables comparison, helps in forecasting and planning, aids policy formulation and testing of theories, and is indispensable to economics, government, business and research.

Meaning

Statistics is the science of collection, organisation, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data. Its importance can be seen from the many uses to which it is put.

Importance of statistics

1. Presents facts in a definite form: statistics expresses facts in exact numerical form, which is more convincing and precise than vague statements.

2. Simplifies complex data: large and complex masses of data are condensed and simplified through averages, percentages, ratios and diagrams, so they become easy to understand.

3. Facilitates comparison: statistical tools (averages, ratios, graphs) make it possible to compare data over time, between regions or between groups.

4. Helps in forecasting and planning: past data are used to predict future trends and to prepare economic plans, budgets and targets.

5. Helps in policy formulation: governments use statistics on population, income, prices and production to frame economic and social policies.

6. Tests and formulates theories: economic theories and laws (such as the law of demand) are tested and verified with the help of statistical data.
