As the supply of land cannot be increased, its supply curve is a vertical line; when demand increases, price rises and the extra earning due to the fixed, scarce supply is called scarcity rent.
Meaning
The concept of scarcity rent is associated with the view that rent arises not only because of differences in fertility (as in Ricardo's differential rent) but also because the total supply of land is fixed and cannot be increased to meet rising demand. The classical and modern writers point out that even homogeneous land of uniform quality earns rent if it is scarce relative to demand. This surplus earned purely because of scarcity is scarcity rent.
