It shows the total spread of the data but is affected by extreme values.
Range is studied under Measures of Dispersion in the Economic Statistics topic of the AP Intermediate 2nd-year Economics course (aligned with the NCERT/CBSE commerce curriculum).
Meaning and formula. Dispersion means the extent to which the values in a data set are spread out from one another. The range is the simplest way of measuring this spread. It is defined as the difference between the highest (largest) value and the lowest (smallest) value in the data.
Range = Largest value (L) minus Smallest value (S)
A related measure, the coefficient of range, is used to compare the dispersion of two data sets and is calculated as:
Coefficient of Range = (L minus S) divided by (L plus S)
Worked example. Suppose the marks of five students are 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30.
Here the largest value L = 30 and the smallest value S = 10.
Range = L minus S = 30 minus 10 = 20.
Coefficient of Range = (30 minus 10) divided by (30 plus 10) = 20 divided by 40 = 0.5.
