Range is the difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set (Range = Largest value − Smallest value). It is the simplest measure of dispersion but uses only the two extreme values.

Range = Largest value (L) − Smallest value (S).

For example, if the marks of students vary from 20 to 80, the range is 80 − 20 = 60. A related relative measure is the coefficient of range, calculated as (L − S) divided by (L + S).
