Forests can be conserved by afforestation and social forestry, regulating tree felling, preventing fires and overgrazing, checking shifting cultivation, protecting against pests, enforcing forest laws, involving local people in joint forest management and spreading awareness.

Forests provide timber, fuel, raw materials, wildlife habitat and vital environmental services such as soil protection, rainfall and clean air. Their rapid depletion makes conservation essential, which the AP Intermediate 2nd-year Economics course (aligned with the NCERT/CBSE commerce curriculum) addresses through the following measures.

Measures for the conservation of forests:

  1. Afforestation and reforestation. Planting trees on a large scale on barren land and replanting felled areas increases forest cover.

  2. Social and farm forestry. Growing trees on community land, roadsides, canal banks and private farms reduces pressure on natural forests.

  3. Regulated felling. Scientific and controlled cutting of trees, with replanting, prevents over-exploitation.

  4. Prevention of forest fires. Fire lines, watch towers and prompt fire-fighting protect forests from destruction.

  5. Control of overgrazing. Restricting the grazing of animals allows young plants and the forest floor to recover.

  6. Checking shifting cultivation. Discouraging slash-and-burn farming prevents the clearing of forests.

  7. Protection from pests and diseases. Timely control of insects and diseases keeps the forest healthy.

  8. Enforcement of forest laws. The National Forest Policy and forest-protection laws restrict illegal felling and encroachment.
