Forests, ponds and grasslands are examples. This is an AP Intermediate 2nd-year Economics topic on environment and the economy.
Meaning: An ecosystem is a system formed by the interaction of a community of living organisms with one another and with their physical (non-living) environment in a particular area. It consists of two kinds of components:
- Biotic components — all living things, including plants (producers), animals (consumers) and micro-organisms (decomposers).
- Abiotic components — the non-living elements such as air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature and minerals.
Within an ecosystem, energy flows from the sun through plants to animals and decomposers, and nutrients are cycled repeatedly between the living and non-living parts. This keeps the system balanced and self-supporting. Ponds, lakes, forests, grasslands, deserts and oceans are common examples of ecosystems.
