Heating a primary amine with CHCl3 and alcoholic KOH gives a foul-smelling isocyanide (carbylamine); this is a test for primary amines.

The carbylamine reaction (also called the isocyanide test) is used to detect primary amines.

When a primary amine (aliphatic or aromatic) is heated with chloroform (CHCl3) and alcoholic potassium hydroxide (KOH), it forms an isocyanide (also called carbylamine, R-NC), which has a very offensive, foul smell.

General reaction:

R-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH (alcoholic) --(heat)--> R-N=C: (R-NC, isocyanide) + 3KCl + 3H2O

Example with aniline:

C6H5-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH --> C6H5-NC (phenyl isocyanide) + 3KCl + 3H2O
