- Carbylamine reaction: When a primary amine (aliphatic or aromatic) is heated with chloroform and alcoholic potassium hydroxide, it forms an isocyanide (carbylamine) with an extremely unpleasant, offensive smell: This reaction is characteristic of primary amines only (secondary and tertiary amines do not respond), so it serves as a chemical test to distinguish 1° amines.
- Gattermann reaction: When a benzene diazonium salt solution is treated with copper powder in the presence of the corresponding halogen acid (HCl or HBr), the diazonium group is replaced by the halogen atom, releasing nitrogen gas: (This is closely related to the Sandmeyer reaction, but Gattermann's version uses copper powder directly instead of cuprous salts like Cu2Cl2/Cu2Br2.)
- HVZ (Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky) reaction: Carboxylic acids having an α-hydrogen atom react with chlorine or bromine in the presence of a small amount of red phosphorus to give the α-halogenated carboxylic acid: Red phosphorus first converts the carboxylic acid to the corresponding acid halide, which readily undergoes halogenation at the α-carbon (via its enol form); the acid halide is then hydrolysed back to the α-halo acid.
