Rutherford's nuclear model (based on the α-particle scattering experiment) places nearly all the atom's mass and positive charge in a tiny central nucleus, with electrons orbiting it — but this fails classically because an orbiting (accelerating) electron should radiate energy continuously and spiral into the nucleus.

Rutherford's atom model (proposed from the results of the α-particle scattering experiment):

  1. Almost the entire mass of the atom and all its positive charge are concentrated in a very small central region called the nucleus.
  2. The size of the nucleus (10−1510^{-15} m) is much smaller than the size of the atom (10−1010^{-10} m).
  3. Electrons, which carry the negative charge, revolve around the nucleus in circular orbits, similar to planets orbiting the Sun, with electrostatic (Coulomb) attraction providing the necessary centripetal force.
  4. The atom as a whole is electrically neutral, i.e., the total negative charge of the electrons equals the total positive charge of the nucleus.
