Rutherford's nuclear atom is unstable by classical electromagnetism (radiating electron spirals in) and cannot account for the sharp line spectra of elements.

Background. Rutherford proposed a tiny positive nucleus with electrons revolving around it like planets. Two serious defects follow from classical physics:

1. Instability of the atom. A revolving electron is continuously accelerating (centripetal acceleration). By classical electromagnetic theory, an accelerating charge radiates energy. Losing energy, the electron would spiral inward and fall into the nucleus in about 10−810^{-8} s. Thus the model predicts an unstable atom, contrary to observation.
