A bipolar junction transistor has three terminals — Emitter (E), Base (B), Collector (C) — drawn as a short vertical base line with two slanted leads (emitter and collector) meeting it at an angle. The arrowhead is always placed on the emitter lead, and it shows the direction of conventional current flow when the emitter-base junction is forward biased.
• p-n-p transistor: the emitter is p-type, so conventional current flows from the emitter into the base — the arrow on the emitter lead points INWARD, toward the base.
• n-p-n transistor: the emitter is n-type, so conventional current flows from the base into the emitter — the arrow on the emitter lead points OUTWARD, away from the base.
