Forward bias pushes majority carriers toward the junction and shrinks the depletion layer; reverse bias pulls carriers away and widens it.

At an unbiased p-n junction, diffusion of majority carriers across the junction (electrons from n-side, holes from p-side) leaves behind fixed, uncompensated ions on either side, creating a narrow depletion region with an internal built-in potential barrier that opposes further diffusion.

(i) Forward bias (p-side connected to the positive terminal, n-side to the negative terminal of the external battery): the applied field opposes the internal built-in field. This drives majority carriers (holes from p, electrons from n) toward the junction, where they neutralise some of the immobile ions. As a result, the depletion layer narrows, its potential barrier is reduced, and eventually (beyond the threshold/knee voltage) significant current flows across the junction.
