The cell cycle is the ordered sequence of growth (interphase: G1, S, G2) followed by division (M phase) that produces two daughter cells.

Short note — Cell cycle:

The cell cycle is the sequence of events in the life of a cell from its formation to its division into two daughter cells. In a typical dividing cell it is completed in two main phases:

  1. Interphase (the resting/preparatory phase, the longest part of the cycle) — the cell is metabolically active and prepares for division. It has three sub-phases:
    • G1 phase (first gap): the cell grows and synthesises proteins and RNA.
    • S phase (synthesis): DNA replication occurs, so the amount of DNA doubles.
    • G2 phase (second gap): further growth and synthesis of proteins needed for division.
  2. M phase (mitotic phase): the actual division, involving:
    • Karyokinesis: division of the nucleus, passing through prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.
    • Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm to form two daughter cells. …
