(a) The cell cycle is divided into interphase (the long preparatory period) and the M phase (mitosis). Interphase, following the M phase, consists of three sub-phases in sequence:

  • A = G1 phase (post-mitotic gap; the cell grows and is metabolically active but does not replicate DNA).
  • B = S phase (synthesis phase; DNA is replicated).
