Each cell-cycle phase has one hallmark event: G1 = growth/pre-replication synthesis, S = DNA replication, G2 = growth/preparation for division, M = actual nuclear and cell division.

The eukaryotic cell cycle is divided into interphase (G1, S, G2) and the mitotic (M) phase.

  • G1 (Gap 1) phase: the cell is metabolically active, grows continuously, and synthesises RNA and proteins required for DNA replication, but DNA is not yet replicated.
  • S (Synthesis) phase: DNA replication takes place — the amount of DNA per cell doubles, and the centriole (in animal cells) also duplicates.
  • G2 (Gap 2) phase: further protein synthesis and cell growth continue, and the cell prepares the machinery (e.g. tubulin for the mitotic spindle) needed for mitosis. …
