Gibberellins are growth-promoting hormones (first found in the fungus Gibberella) that cause stem elongation, seed germination, bolting and increased fruit size.

Gibberellins are a large group of growth-promoting plant hormones. GA3 (gibberellic acid) is the most studied.

Discovery and nature:

  • They were first obtained from a fungus, Gibberella fujikuroi, which caused the 'bakanae' (foolish seedling) disease of rice — excessive elongation of the shoot.

Main effects (physiological roles):

  1. Cause elongation of the stem and internodes, so treated plants grow taller.
  2. Promote seed germination and break the dormancy of seeds and buds.
  3. Cause 'bolting' — sudden internode elongation just before flowering — in rosette plants such as cabbage. …
