Gibberellins are growth-promoting hormones best known for causing dramatic stem elongation (bolting), but they also regulate seed germination, flowering, fruit development and senescence.

Gibberellins (GAs) are a large group of plant growth hormones (over 100 have been identified, e.g., GA₃ or gibberellic acid), first discovered from the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi causing the 'bakane' disease of rice seedlings. Their functions include:

  1. Stem/internode elongation: Gibberellins are responsible for causing an increase in the length of the axis, most dramatically seen when applied to genetically dwarf plants and rosette plants, causing 'bolting' (rapid stem elongation just before flowering) — e.g., in cabbage and many other rosette plants.
  2. Seed germination: They help mobilise stored food (by inducing the synthesis of hydrolytic enzymes like α-amylase) in cereal grains during germination, and can break seed and bud dormancy, promoting faster germination. …
