Gibberellins are sprayed on sugarcane to elongate the internodes, which increases the length of the stem (and hence the amount of sugar-storing tissue) and boosts sugar yield.

Gibberellins are a group of plant growth hormones best known for causing marked increases in stem/internode elongation. Commercially, gibberellin (GA3) spray is used on sugarcane crops: it stimulates the internodes to elongate more than usual, increasing the total length of the cane. Since sugar (sucrose) accumulates in the stem tissue of sugarcane, a longer stem with more internodal tissue translates into a higher yield of sugar per plant.
