Gibberellins are growth hormones best known for causing stem elongation, but they have several other important physiological effects in plants.

Physiological responses of gibberellins:

  1. Stem elongation: Gibberellins cause an increase in the length of the axis, most dramatically seen in genetically dwarf plants (e.g., dwarf maize/pea), which attain normal height on GA application.
  2. Bolting: In rosette plants (e.g., cabbage), gibberellin causes rapid internode elongation just before flowering ('bolting').
  3. Seed germination: Gibberellins promote germination of seeds that otherwise require cold or light treatment to germinate. In cereal grains, GA stimulates the aleurone layer to synthesise the enzyme alpha-amylase, which hydrolyses stored starch in the endosperm into sugars used by the growing embryo.
  4. Flowering: In many plants requiring long days or a period of cold (vernalisation), gibberellin application can induce flowering even under non-inductive (e.g., short day) conditions.
  5. Parthenocarpy: Gibberellins can induce the formation of seedless fruits (e.g., in tomato, apple) without prior fertilisation. …
